When dealing with music royalty, there are several people who get paid. First there are the recording artists and then songwriter/publisher royalties. Since you are a recording artists, you earn royalties from sale of your recording on CDs and cassette tapes. You do not earn any on public performances such as your music being played on the radio, in bars, etc. However, songwriters and publishers do get royalties for these instances with small portion of the recording sales.
Since there is a lot of illegal mp3 downloads going on these days, it makes it hard for the recording artists since they are not paid royalties for these illegally downloaded mp3s. You are paid royalties only for paid sales of your music, when they are downloaded for free there is no portion of any sale to come back to you. If you have further questions about royalties for your record sales and how to protect yourself from losing out, please contact an entertainment lawyer who is experienced in the music industry to help you further.
