Write Book

Literary agents and attorneys are often employed by authors in order to secure and negotiate a publishing contract after they write a book. It is also possible to write a book and self publish it, however both options can be risky, especially for more inexperienced writers. Self publishing a book comes with many responsibilities that can be both costly and time consuming, and because of this many authors choose to publish through a publishing house. Literary agents submit and pitch a manuscript to publishing houses, and once accepted they may also help negotiate a contract. Attorneys are also often used in addition to literary agents once a writer is in the contract negotiation phase. Contract negotiations can include negotiations regarding advance payments, copyrights, royalties, subsidiary rights (such as movie rights and rights to foreign sales), the editing process, and even the graphics and images on the book jacket. Because most publishing contracts are written to favor publishers and not writers, those seeking to write a book and publish it should consider consulting an attorney or other specialist to make sure the contract is fair.
