A recording artist contract is a legal agreement signed by a recording artist and a record label. The recording artist makes a record, and the record label promotes and sells the record under the terms of the recording artist contract. Generally a recording artist contract specifies that the artist may only record music for the label they are under contract with, giving the label exclusive rights to the artist;s creative output. The record label may also own the copyright to any work produced by an artist under contract. The master copies of the music may also be owned by the record label. Artists have consequently argued that recording contracts are unfair and take away too much creative control and too many rights from the artists, leaving the record label to reap the majority of the profits. Many recording artists have suffered financial losses due to bad contracts. It is therefore suggested that a recording artist contract be reviewed by a qualified attorney in order to ensure that the deal is fair and beneficial to the artist.
