Publishing Contracts

Publishing contracts are legal contracts between writers and publishers that outline the specifics of the publishing process. Publishing contracts will generally include information about how a book will be edited, published, and marketed, how the money from book sales will be distributed between the author and publisher, what royalties and advances the writer will receive, who retains the copyright to the book, and what rights are granted for subsidiary works such as movies and audio books, as well as many other legal issues regarding the publishing process. Inexperienced writers are sometimes taken advantage of and sign into bad publishing deals which offer them too little money and too few rights to their unique creative work. Publishing contracts are usually written to favor publishers over writers, and therefore any writer thinking about entering into a publishing contract should consider consulting an attorney who specializes in book publishing contracts to help negotiate the terms of the contract.
