Publisher Contracts

Publisher contracts are legally binding agreements outlining the terms of a publishing deal. Publisher contracts are regularly used in book publishing contracts for literary works of fiction and non fiction. Novels, short story collections, poetry, essays, published plays, and textbooks, are some of the many types of published work that may be discussed in the terms of a publisher contract. Publisher contracts should specify how an author will be paid. Advance payments are sometimes made to authors before a work is completed and published. The percentage of the profits from future sales awarded to authors is also usually included in publisher contracts. Publisher contracts may also specify both the artist's and the publishers rights in regard to future editions of the work as well as subsidiary rights to movie development deals. The editing process may also be outlined in a contract. As with any legal contract, a publishing contract should be reviewed by an experienced attorney before signing.
