Producer Contracts

Music producer contracts specify the rights and responsibilities granted to both the musicians and producers during the recording process. The terms of music producer contracts often include information on advance payments to the producer for his or her work, and who is responsible for the payment. Generally, either the artist, the record label, or a third party will make an advance payment to a record producer. Music producer contracts will also usually specify how many points a prodicer is entitled to. Points refers to the percentage of album sales paid to the producer of a specific work. The more experienced and talented the producer, the more points he may get in a producer contract. Often new or inexperienced musicians who are excited by the prospect of working with a big name producer sign unfair producer contracts which give too much compensation and/or creative control to the producer. It is recommended that a contract be given to an attorney with experience in entertainment law for review before signing.
