A producer contract is a contract used to set the terms of a musical recording process. Musicians and the record labels that represent them enter into contracts with record producers who oversee the recording process. Some producers may be very hands on, and may assist in the writing and arranging of music, while other producers may simply record songs. A specific producer contract should clearly state the duties expected of the producer during the recording process. Also, a producer contract should state whether the producer is paid an advance for his work, and who pays the advance. Points should also be spelled out in a producer contract. Points are awarded to producers, and represent the percentage of income that a producer will get from future record sales. More experienced producers generally are awarded more points in a producer contract. Clauses in producer contracts may also stipulate who has ownership over the final recorded product.
