Music Publishing Contract

There are many different kinds of music publishing contracts, and contracts are often specifically tailored to fit the unique situation. There are, however, some basic types of music publishing contracts. A "co-publishing" music publishing contract is a very common contract in the music business. In this type of contract, a song writer and the publisher become co-owners of the copyrights to the artists songs. The contract will specify how royalties will be divided between the two parties. Another type of music publishing contract is a single song agreement. In this type of deal, a song writer gives a publisher rights to an individual song, usually receiving an advance under the terms of the contract. Exclusive song writer contracts, also called "staff writer" contracts, are work for hire agreements where songwriters are paid an advance or in some cases a salary to write songs for a publisher. The music publisher owns the rights to the songs written under the contract.
