Music Distribution Rights

Music distribution rights may be negotiated allowing a music distributer to distribute music to stores and retail outlets in the form of cd's, records, or tapes. Music distribution rights also control how music is distributed online for digital downloads. Recording artists often make distribution deals with publishers or record labels, allowing the record label to distribute the artist's music in exchange for a percentage of the profit from sales. Distribution agreements now regularly include the right to distribute musical content in a digital format for online downloads. The iTunes Music Store has become increasingly popular in recent years, as many currently download music directly to their iPod or other portable device instead of purchasing a hard copy cd. Music distribution rights are usually outlined in a formal music distribution contract, which is signed by both the musical artist and the distributer. Like any legal contract, a distribution contract should be reviewed by a knowledgeable attorney before agreeing to the terms of the contract.
