Music Distribution Contract

A music distribution contract is a contract made between a recording artist or musician and a record label who agrees to distribute the artist's music. Usually a music distribution contract agreement is made after a musician has recorded and produced their music, and the company only agrees to distribute the work. Many musicians choose to write, record and produce their music on their own, which allows them creative control and the freedom to create the music they want to create. After the process is finished, they find a distributor for their work. In contrast, a recording contract offers less creative control, giving record labels more power over the recording process. A music distribution contract should specify how the work will be distributed and what sort of promotion or publicity, if any, the distributer will provide in order to market the work. A music distribution contract should also clearly state what percentage of profits go to the artist, and what percentage goes to the distributer.
