Contract For Music Artist

A recording artist contract, also called a record deal, is an agreement between a record label and a recording artist and is specifically a contract for music. Artist compensation and rights in a record deal are often limited, especially for new or inexperienced artists. A contract for a music artist will generally obligate the artist to record exclusively for the record label they are under contract with. Record labels also often own the copyrights and master tapes of the music made by artists under contract. Many artists and artist's rights groups feel this is unfair, and argue that artists should have ownership over their own unique creative output. Creative control is another hot button issue in recording contracts. Artists generally want to do what they want to do, and desire as little control as possible, while record labels often want to control an artist's image, sound, marketing, and many other factors.
