Book Copyrights

A common item that is often negotiated in book publishing contracts is who owns book copyrights. Many authors desire to retain the copyright to their creative work, while at the same time many publishers also seek to own the copyright to the material. Because of this, contract negotiations are common when agreeing to book publishing contracts. There are both advantages and disadvantages to an author retaining the copyright to a creative work that is published through a publishing company. Generally, the advantages outweigh the risks, and many authors are reluctant to part with copyright rights to their unique creative work. In the event of copyright infringement, it can be seen as beneficial to have the copyright owned by a large corporation instead of an individual writer, who would have limited resources to fight an infringement case. On the other hand, giving away book copyrights gives away certain rights that many authors feel are too important to lose. Books often take years to write, and the creators of creative works do not want to give away the rights to something that they worked so long and hard for.
