Book Copyright Laws

Book copyright laws govern how books can be used and quoted from, and who has control of the rights to a specific book. Generally, book copyright laws allow persons who are not the copyright holder of a book to quote from a book under "fair use" laws. Fair use means that a book may be quoted from in articles or other works, under certain conditions. Proper attribution, meaning specifically referencing where the quote came from, and naming the copyright golder if necessary, is generally required under fair use laws. Book copyright laws also allow for parody of copyrighted works, but copying, plagiarizing, or creating derivative works of a copyrighted book is generally not allowed under the law. Those violating the copyright of a book may be subject to legal action and monetary penalties. An author may be the owner of a book copyright in some cases; in other cases the publisher of the book may retain copyright rights.
