An artist producer contract may refer to an agreement made between a recording artist and a music producer. Music producers work in the studio with recording artists, and they record and mix the artist's songs for albums or other media. An artist producer contract may specify that an advance payment be made to the music producer for his or her work, or a share of later profits may be negotiated, or a combination of the two may be stipulated in an artist producer contract. Profit shares are usually distributed based on "points," and the number of points governs what percentage of future profits a producer may be entitled to. The number of points depends largely on the producer's skill and experience level. Highly respected producers with impressive resumes will generally be awarded more points than new producers who have not yet recorded any hit songs. The number of points a producer is entitled to should be clearly stated in the artist producer contract.
