Artist Contracts

Artist contracts for record deals related to the music industry have been the subject of much legal debate, as many argue that recording artist contracts give too few rights and too little monetary compensation to recording artists for their unique creative work. Especially in the case of first time contracts for newer recording artists, record labels often give artists a very small percentage of royalties. Also, many artist contracts require artists to pay a record label back for advances and upfront payments, meaning that they royalties they stand to make may be already spent. Artist contracts may also require that the costs for videos or other promotional material be taken out of album sales. This leaves many recording artists with little monetary compensation to show for their creative output, as large percentages of their income go directly back to their record label. Once an artist gains success, they may be able to negotiate a better contract, yet for those just starting out artist contracts can be financially risky.
